JAYLEN

“Slowly but Surely”

(WRITTEN BY HER MOTHER)

My daughter, Jaylen began having difficulties with learning due to a medical condition.

I contacted the Literacy council when Jaylen was 13 and we began our 3 year journey with Mrs. Dana, Jaylen’s reading coach.

It was a challenge at first because Jaylen was shy and stubborn and would rather be playing video games than working on her reading. Slowly but surely Jaylen and Dana developed a bond and she became excited to go every week for her “reading practice”, as she called it.

We went almost every week. Jaylen is a big storm chaser- so they would read books about hurricanes, tornadoes, and weather.

After three years Jaylen had made amazing progress, achieved her goals and we decided that there were other people who needed help, so we parted ways.

We still keep in touch, Mrs. Dana checks in to see how Jaylen is doing.

Jaylen graduated high school, she has a job, and is currently studying for her driving permit.

The Ozarks Literacy Council was a great help to Jaylen and we are so happy we got involved with them.
