"Just As I Am - Portraits and Stories of Down Syndrome"
8 Billion Ones and Kansas City Down Syndrome Innovations proudly present “Just As I Am”. This art exhibition aims to create awareness and a better understanding of Down syndrome through intimate portraiture and films by award winning photographer Randy Bacon and heartfelt stories by individuals with Down syndrome.
Through Bacon's artistic eye and lens, Just As I Am powerfully invites us to view the world of someone living with Down syndrome in unique, emotive ways. This exhibit's mission is to create awareness and a better understanding of Down syndrome through raw, authentic stories, intimate artistic portraiture and short film series, and to change the way we see those with Down syndrome. Viewers will leave the exhibit realizing individuals are not deficient in any way; but are in fact “extra.” An extra chromosome gives those with Down syndrome an extraordinary ability to see the good, the joy, and the beauty in this world that the rest of us can’t see. This project challenges us to celebrate those with Down syndrome just as they are and to recognize the gifts and talents these individuals bring to the world.
“This project is one that has touched my heart deeply. Individuals living with Down syndrome have such a genuine expression of emotion; they have a different filter that allows them to experience the world in a deeply authentic way...something I think we all could use a little more of AND that each of us can learn from” - Randy Bacon
